Our story

Eighteen years of principled evolution.

From managed systems support through a private cloud platform to the specialist firm we are today.

Secure Data Solutions was founded in 2007 to help small and midsize organizations manage the Microsoft, network, and business systems their work depended on. In those early years, the firm combined managed support with project delivery — Active Directory, Exchange, Citrix, VMware, networking, and the application environments clients ran daily.

In 2013, SDS developed SecureVDC, a hosted application and desktop delivery environment built on VMware, Windows Server, and Citrix XenDesktop. The platform ran for roughly two years and gave SDS direct experience with the architecture challenges of multi-tenant application delivery — the performance, isolation, and infrastructure decisions that only become visible when real users depend on the platform.

Over time, the demand for a different kind of engagement grew. Clients needed help with problems that exceeded the standard managed-service model: migrations that could not afford unplanned downtime, security redesigns that crossed multiple systems and teams, technical situations where someone needed to understand both the security requirement and the operating environment it had to live in. SDS concentrated its practice there.

That evolution brought a related shift: working alongside MSPs, integrators, and internal teams that had strong baseline capabilities but needed trusted specialist depth for specific programs. SDS occupies that role deliberately — contributing at the right level, then transferring knowledge so the result is durable.

Today SDS focuses on cybersecurity architecture, external exposure and vulnerability assessment, network detection and response, incident response, and private AI infrastructure.

Why it matters

Security decisions don’t live in isolation.

The breadth of our technical foundation shapes how we evaluate exposure and design controls.

A firewall rule affects application reachability. A segmentation policy touches identity systems, service accounts, and the administrators who manage them. A detection strategy depends on understanding what normal traffic looks like before labeling something suspicious.

SDS built its practice from the systems upward — starting with the applications, directories, networks, and operating dependencies that organizations actually run. That foundation shapes how we evaluate exposure, design controls, and ensure that security changes do not produce unexpected gaps somewhere else in the stack.

The result is architecture that accounts for the full environment — not a perimeter diagram that satisfies a compliance checkbox but breaks against the way the network is actually used.

SDS leads engagements directly for enterprise and public-sector clients. We also work alongside MSPs, integrators, and internal teams as trusted specialist depth — contributing architecture, engineering, and decision-quality judgment to programs the partner has initiated.

In either model, the approach is the same: understand the operating environment, design the right path, engineer it carefully, and transfer knowledge so the outcome holds.

We don’t position ourselves against the partners we work alongside. The best result is a capable partner team with something difficult resolved, documented, and running.

Eddie Espino — Founder and lead architect.

The accountable person behind every SDS engagement.

Eddie Espino founded Secure Data Solutions in 2007 and has led its practice since. His background spans more than 25 years across technology and cybersecurity — beginning with the systems work that shaped SDS’s early practice and expanding into increasingly specialized territory over the years that followed.

His foundation includes Microsoft infrastructure, Active Directory, Exchange, Citrix, VMware, networking, data-center engineering, and the business applications organizations depend on to operate. That grounding is not a historical footnote. It informs every security engagement where the right answer has to survive contact with a real production environment.

Early security practice

During the late 2000s, while working at CompuQuip, Eddie performed penetration testing and security assessments across banking, municipal, and nonprofit environments. That work sharpened his ability to distinguish a theoretical weakness from an exposure with practical consequences — a perspective that still informs how SDS approaches exposure assessment, control design, and remediation.

Progression and industry depth

His later work expanded across enterprise security architecture, critical infrastructure programs, network detection and response, incident recovery, automation, and private AI infrastructure. Over the years, Eddie held full-time positions at CompuQuip (2004–2012), Fortinet (2020–2021), and Corelight (2022–2023), each adding a distinct dimension to how he understands security at scale.

At Fortinet, he worked as a field-facing security architect across a range of enterprise accounts and product environments. At Corelight, he specialized in NDR engineering — deploying Corelight and Zeek sensors, building Suricata detection logic, integrating threat intelligence, and engineering automated sensor lifecycle operations, including work supporting a national security organization.

Those positions inform his perspective but don’t define it. SDS designs and recommends based on the environment and the problem, not a product relationship.

Direct involvement

Eddie is the lead architect on SDS engagements. Clients work directly with someone who understands the environment, carries the engagement through delivery, and remains accountable for the outcome.
